Fabrication & Installation Guidelines

These guidelines provide general recommendations for the fabrication and installation of Posh Textiles products. Because installation requirements vary by textile, application, project conditions, substrate, and local regulations, the applicable product specifications and project documents should always be reviewed before work begins.

Installation and fabrication should be performed by an experienced professional familiar with contract textiles and the intended application.

Before Cutting or Installation

Before cutting, fabricating, upholstering, or installing any material:

Do not cut or install material that appears incorrect, damaged, defective, or inconsistent with the approved specification. Contact Posh Textiles before proceeding.

Cutting or installing material generally constitutes acceptance of its visible condition.

Confirm the pattern name, color, quantity, width, backing, finish, and dye-lot information.
Compare all rolls against the approved sample or Cutting for Approval.
Confirm that sufficient yardage has been received.
Review the product’s stated application, content, usable width, pattern repeat, cleaning code, railroaded status, and technical specifications.
Inspect the material under suitable lighting for visible damage, weaving irregularities, shade variation, contamination, or shipping damage.
Verify pattern direction, motif placement, seam locations, and matching requirements.
Allow the material to acclimate to normal interior conditions before fabrication where appropriate.
Confirm that the textile meets the project’s required performance, fire, building-code, and regulatory requirements.

Product Variation

Textiles may exhibit reasonable variations in color, texture, weave, finish, dimensions, pattern alignment, and surface character.

Natural fibers, recycled fibers, textured yarns, slubs, nubs, and specialty constructions may contain variations that are inherent to the material and are not necessarily defects.

Materials from different production or dye lots should not be installed together in the same visually continuous area unless the variation has been reviewed and accepted.

Pattern Direction and Railroaded Use

Review the product page to determine whether the fabric is shown or intended to be used railroaded.

Up the roll means the pattern or textile direction runs parallel to the selvage.

Railroaded means the fabric is turned so that its width runs horizontally across the application.

Do not railroad a fabric unless its construction, width, appearance, and stated application are suitable for that orientation.

Directional fabrics, velvets, chenilles, stripes, plaids, geometric designs, and fabrics with visible nap must be consistently oriented throughout the installation.

Mark the top, face side, and direction of each cut before fabrication.

Pattern Matching

Confirm both the horizontal and vertical repeat before calculating yardage or cutting.

Additional material may be required for:

Pattern repeat measurements are approximate and may vary slightly due to textile construction and finishing.

Where exact placement is important, prepare a cutting plan or fabrication drawing before cutting.

matching motifs across adjoining surfaces;
centering patterns;
aligning stripes or geometric designs;
matching cushions and upholstered sections;
matching seams;
maintaining consistent pattern placement; and
accommodating large repeats.

Upholstery Installation

For upholstery applications:

The upholsterer is responsible for determining the suitability of the textile and fabrication method for the furniture design and end use.

Use an appropriate frame, padding system, foundation, and upholstery construction for the intended use.
Inspect and prepare the furniture frame before applying the textile.
Avoid placing excessive tension on the fabric.
Apply tension evenly to prevent distortion, puckering, bowing, or seam failure.
Position seams away from areas of concentrated stress whenever practical.
Use suitable thread, needles, stitch length, seam allowance, backing, and reinforcement.
Reinforce high-stress areas, corners, curves, attachment points, and frequently used edges as needed.
Keep the fabric direction and nap consistent across all components.
Avoid mixing rolls or dye lots on the same furniture item.
Protect the textile from exposed staples, sharp frame components, unfinished wood, adhesive residue, and abrasive surfaces.

Velvet and Nap Fabrics

Velvet and other pile fabrics require additional care during cutting, sewing, handling, and installation.

Pile direction can materially affect the apparent color and shading of the textile.

Install all pieces with the nap running in the same direction unless the approved design specifies otherwise.
Clearly mark direction before cutting.
Avoid crushing or permanently marking the pile.
Do not stack heavy objects on cut fabric or completed upholstery.
Use appropriate upholstery techniques to minimize seam impressions and pile distortion.
Review the completed installation under the project’s normal lighting conditions.

Drapery Installation

For drapery and window-treatment applications:

Textile weight, construction, finishing, and environmental conditions may affect drape, fullness, and finished dimensions.

Confirm that the selected textile is approved for drapery use.
Verify the required finished dimensions, fullness, heading style, lining, hardware, and pattern placement.
Confirm the textile’s fire-performance requirements for the project.
Allow for hems, headings, seams, pattern matching, and possible dimensional movement.
Maintain a consistent pattern and nap direction across all panels.
Test pressing, steaming, or ironing on a concealed sample before applying heat to the finished treatment.
Do not allow drapery to rest against heaters, damp surfaces, abrasive architectural elements, or active HVAC outlets.
Install appropriate hardware capable of supporting the completed treatment.

Privacy Curtains

For privacy-curtain applications:

The fabricator and installer are responsible for compliance with applicable healthcare, fire, accessibility, and building requirements.

Use only textiles specified for privacy-curtain use.
Confirm required fire testing, mesh dimensions, finished height, track compatibility, and project-specific healthcare requirements.
Use suitable heading, grommets, carriers, seams, and reinforcement.
Ensure the finished curtain does not obstruct sprinklers, ventilation, medical equipment, or required clearances.
Verify laundering and maintenance requirements before fabrication.
Keep patterns and directional surfaces consistently aligned.

Headboards and Wall Panels

For upholstered headboards and wall-panel applications:

A textile’s individual flammability result does not automatically establish compliance for the complete panel, backing, adhesive, padding, and substrate assembly.

Ensure that the substrate is dry, clean, smooth, stable, and structurally suitable.
Confirm that padding, adhesives, backing materials, fasteners, and substrates are compatible with the textile.
Avoid direct contact with sharp, unfinished, contaminated, or moisture-affected surfaces.
Maintain even tension without stretching or distorting the fabric.
Plan seams, joints, panel edges, and pattern placement before cutting.
Match patterns across adjacent panels where specified.
Maintain consistent nap and textile direction.
Conceal or finish raw edges using an appropriate fabrication method.
Confirm that the complete installed assembly satisfies the project’s applicable fire and building-code requirements.

Adhesives

Do not apply adhesive directly to a Posh Textiles product unless the textile has been approved for that installation method.

Before full installation:

Posh Textiles is not responsible for damage caused by an incompatible adhesive, substrate, backing, or installation system.

Confirm adhesive compatibility with the textile, backing, finish, and substrate.
Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
Conduct a test installation using production materials.
Check for staining, bleed-through, discoloration, delamination, stiffening, odor, or loss of adhesion.
Observe the required ventilation, application rate, open time, curing conditions, and safety precautions.

Outdoor Applications

Use only products specifically designated for outdoor use.

For outdoor installations:

Outdoor suitability does not mean that a textile is immune to fading, weathering, staining, mildew, or deterioration under all conditions.

Provide adequate drainage and ventilation.
Do not allow water to remain trapped beneath or behind the textile.
Use outdoor-rated foam, thread, zippers, fasteners, substrates, and construction materials.
Protect the textile from prolonged standing water, excessive soil, chemicals, heat sources, and avoidable environmental exposure.
Follow appropriate cleaning and drying procedures.
Store removable cushions in a dry, ventilated location when not in use for extended periods.

Marine and IMO Applications

For marine projects, verify that the specific product and proposed application meet the required International Maritime Organization or other applicable marine standards.

The installer, shipyard, designer, fabricator, and specification professional are responsible for confirming that the complete installed assembly complies with project and regulatory requirements.

Do not assume that a product approved for one marine application is approved for every marine use.

Sewing and Fabrication

Needle size, thread, seam construction, stitch length, backing, reinforcement, and fabrication methods should be selected according to:

Test the proposed fabrication method on production material before beginning full fabrication.

Take care to prevent yarn displacement, seam slippage, fraying, puckering, needle damage, coating damage, and distortion.

intended application;
furniture or panel design;
expected use and stress;
required appearance; and
applicable performance standards.

Finishes and Treatments

Some Posh Textiles products may be available with optional performance treatments for particular end uses. Treatment availability, pricing, performance, appearance, and lead time should be confirmed before ordering.

Do not apply aftermarket stain repellents, flame treatments, adhesives, coatings, disinfectants, or other chemicals without first testing compatibility.

Supplemental treatments may alter the textile’s hand, color, texture, drape, cleaning properties, appearance, or performance.

Fire and Regulatory Compliance

Product pages may identify tests such as CAL 117-2013, NFPA 260, NFPA 701, UFAC, ASTM E84, or applicable IMO standards.

Test information applies only to the product and test conditions identified in the relevant documentation. It does not represent approval of every installation or finished assembly.

The project’s designer, specifier, fabricator, installer, contractor, and code professional are responsible for determining:

which standards apply;
whether treatment is required;
whether current test documentation is acceptable;
whether the complete installed assembly complies; and
whether additional project-specific testing is necessary.

Care After Installation

Protect completed work from construction dust, paint, adhesive, tools, packaging, moisture, direct heat, and other trades.

Do not use plastic coverings in a manner that may trap moisture against the textile.

Follow the cleaning code and Posh Textiles’ Care and Cleaning Instructions for the specific product. Cleaning methods should always be tested first in an inconspicuous area.

Installer Responsibility

These guidelines are general recommendations and do not replace the professional judgment of the fabricator or installer.

The fabricator and installer are responsible for:

inspecting the material before use;
confirming suitability for the intended application;
calculating required yardage;
selecting appropriate fabrication and installation materials;
following project drawings and specifications;
complying with applicable laws, codes, and standards; and
completing a test installation when appropriate.

Claims and Installation Concerns

Stop work immediately if a potential defect, incorrect product, shade variation, damaged material, or installation problem is discovered.

Retain all labels, roll information, packing documentation, photographs, samples, and unused material. Contact Posh Textiles before cutting or installing additional yardage.

Claims involving material that has already been cut, fabricated, or installed may be limited under the applicable Warranty, Warranty Claims Process, Returns and Cancellations Policy, and Terms of Sale.
